Known as the Kalamkari of Gujarat, ‘Mata-ni-Pachedi’ translates to “behind the Goddess.” It is said that the art originated centuries ago, when the Vaghari tribe was barred from entering temples, they created their own travelling shrines of the Mother Goddess they worshiped. Using bamboo sticks dipped in natural dyes, artists from the once-nomadic tribe, now settled in Ahmedabad, create incredibly intricate sacred paintings on cloth, depicting various incarnations of the Mother Goddess, flora and fauna.
