Hand painted in natural dyes on cloth, Mata-ni-Pachedi painting of Baochar Mata. This form of Goddess, seated on a rooster, is the goddess of fertility and chastity, and patroness of the 'Hijra' community. The base and border of this painting is bright red. Known as the Kalamkari of Gujarat, ‘Mata-ni-Pachedi’ translates to “behind the Goddess.” It is said that the art originated centuries ago, when the Vaghari tribe was barred from entering temples, they created their own travelling shrines of the Mother Goddess they worshiped - Jogni Mata, Meldi Mata, Vishat Mata, Bahuchara Mata, Hadkai Mata and more.
